British MP Helen Joanne Cox was shot and stabbed this month while campaigning in her constituency in Birstall, West Yorkshire. She died in hospital shortly after the attack.
A graduate of the University of Cambridge, Cox began her career working with Oxfam. She also served as the national chair of the Labour Women’s Network for four years and collaborated with such admirable organisations as the Maternal Mortality Campaign, Save the Children, and the Freedom Fund. She was elected to Parliament in May 2015.
Some labelled Cox a leftist politician, but in her husband’s words, she “believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life, with an energy and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.” She should be remembered for her passionate and vocal advocacy for human rights and social justice issues.
